Last week as I was driving home at sunset, minding my own business, I ran into a strange situation. I was cruising in the right lane of a four lane highway (two lanes both ways). I suddenly spotted a small Chevy coming up from behind me and moving over to the passing lane. As he passed, it was a gentleman I judged to be in his early seventies with white hair, who made a point of flashing me the middle finger salute. At first I thought it must be a mistake, I certainly did not recognize the person or car and was keeping to myself. Then it hit me. I was driving with a Trump bumper sticker on the back of my car and the person was giving me his two cents, or perhaps one cent in this case, of Mr. Trump.
Frankly, I burst out laughing as to the absurdity of the situation, but the incident caused me to pause to consider Trump’s antagonists. Being at odds with Democratic liberals is certainly not new to me, I have jousted with them many times in the past over the Internet due to some of my editorials. What I experienced was the same type of hate many Trump supporters have encountered recently by protesters at Trump events, but on a smaller scale.
In a similar story, I have an illustrator friend who has built a strong reputation in the art world. He is often solicited to visit college campuses to discuss his craft. Interestingly, the faculty love him until they discover, to their horror, he is a conservative. They simply cannot believe an artist can be such. As this often causes problems in delivering his talks, it is not uncommon for him to keep his political beliefs to himself.
As we have witnessed over the past few months, the only opinions that seem to matter to the Trump protesters are their own. Conservatives are not allowed to have an opinion and the concept of respectable debate is simply not tolerated. This is why I cannot wait to see the debates between Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton; the liberals outside of the event will likely turn it into a brawl and I frankly pity the police who will have to control these debates.
The left genuinely believes they enjoy mental superiority, which explains why they cannot comprehend how anyone could possibly have an opposing viewpoint. From their perspective, anyone who doesn’t share their view is presumed to be mentally inferior. As such, they take delight in explaining your stupidity. To illustrate, the rhetoric of Hillary Clinton is viewed by liberals as honest and forthright. Yet, the speeches of Donald Trump are characterized as obnoxious and offensive. In other words, there is no room for divergent opinions. In the minds of liberals, it is okay for them not to be politically correct, but not conservatives, which leads me to believe they confuse intelligence with social maladjustment.
The objective of the left is to provoke some form of response thereby duping conservatives into a confrontation designed to make them look bad to the press. I learned a long time ago not to take their bait, just as my friend has, and will not lower myself to their level. This is why there is a “silent majority” in this country. People on the right simply do not want to appear crass and offensive. They will make their voices heard in the voting booth as opposed to losing their dignity in a confrontation.
If you have to respond to a liberal provocation, perhaps the best thing to do is simply laugh at them as I did on the road. They won’t see the humor, but you will.
Just laugh.
